Mulch measuring guide
How much mulch do I need?
Measure bed area and choose a depth to estimate cubic yards. The calculator gives you a starting quantity for your mulch order.
Measure the bed before choosing an amount
For a rectangular bed, multiply length by width in feet for square feet. For curved beds, divide them into rectangles or triangles, estimate each, and add the areas. Measure each bed separately when its size or depth differs.
Count mulchable ground, not lawn or paving. Around trees or walks, measure open soil, not the full outline. Include space between plants, roots, stones and edging.
Choose a depth for the bed
Choose depth based on existing mulch and the bed's needs: two inches for a light refresh, three for a standard new installation, or four as a heavier weed-suppression example.
These are examples, not a rule for every bed. Keep mulch clear of trunks, stems, siding and surfaces needing clearance. Existing layers and uneven ground change the depth.
Convert square feet and inches to cubic yards
To estimate volume, multiply area in square feet by depth in inches, then divide by 324. That gives approximate cubic yards. For example, 108 square feet at three inches uses about one yard. Calculate each bed separately if depths differ.
One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. It covers about 162 square feet at two inches, 108 at three, or 81 at four. These examples assume an even layer and exclude extra for uneven ground.
Account for existing mulch and delivery
Check whether old mulch has broken down or remains as a deep layer. New mulch over compacted material can raise bed edges and bury lower stems. Removing or redistributing old mulch may suit the bed better. Installation includes edge preparation and debris removal.
Enter each bed's area and depth in the calculator, then add volumes. Its estimate rounds up to a tenth of a yard and follows the one-yard minimum. Natural hardwood, Chocolate and Dark mulch are available by the cubic yard; ask about other blends. We deliver on your schedule, subject to route availability, then spread the material after arrival.
